Grant-winning project at Arapahoe Ridge High School

Ivan Paints His World was recently used by students at Arapahoe Ridge High School in Boulder, Colorado as an inspiration for creating digital stories about their own immigrant experience. Max Nealon, the book’s author, and Jode Brexa, a teacher at Arapahoe Ridge, submitted a proposal for this project, and were awarded a Teachers Globalizing Classrooms Grant.

The grant award was used to purchase digital cameras and the students read Ivan Paints His World as a preparatory step for telling their own stories. After reading the book, the students brainstormed, wrote, edited, and recorded their own narratives to upload into digital stories. What a great project!

Presentation at Casey Middle School

The Casey Middle School language arts department will be hosting a reading of “Ivan Paints His World” as part of their Civil Rights presentations on January 20, 2011.

The Boulder, Colorado middle school has invited Max Nealon, the book’s author, to present Ivan’s story to its language arts students.
